Steak Team Mission Grills
for Nimitz Sailors
December 14,2009
By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Joseph H. Moon, USS
Nimitz Public Affairs
USS NIMITZ, At Sea (NNS) -- Deployed Sailors were treated to
grilled steak filet by the Steak Team Mission during a steel beach
picnic on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68)
Dec. 12.
The nonprofit group from Dallas provides steaks and support to forward
deployed service members as a gesture of appreciation for their
service.
"This is our way of giving back to our country, and it's great to
come out here and say hello to these Sailors and shake their hands and
thank them for what they're doing for our country," said Jeff
Hellberg, a member of the Steak Team.
The organization shipped, prepared and served 5,000 steaks, weighing
more than 2,500 pounds. The event was funded by donations from north
Texas contributors and members of the Steak Team Mission.
"We have a group of folks that ventured halfway around the world,
to this ship, to bring a great meal, spread a little cheer and just
talk with Sailors and let them know 'hey we support you'," said
Nimitz Commanding Officer Capt. Paul Monger.
Sailors flocked to the flight deck for the steel beach picnic to get a
beef fillet cooked to order, along with the rest of their lunch.
Morale, Welfare and Recreation offered several games throughout the
afternoon. Sailors had the opportunity to participate in basketball
and ping pong tournaments and the evening was topped off with a movie
night in the ship's hangar bay.
Steak Team Mission founder, Harvey Gough, said the team was created
seven years ago to take special care of those Soldiers, Sailors,
Marines, and Airmen who are deployed.
Far from family and friends during the holiday season, this reprieve
allowed the Sailors to relax and recharge for a moment before getting
back to the task of supporting coalition forces during Operation
Enduring Freedom.
"They picked the best state to bring the steaks from." Said
Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SW/AW) Crystal White, a Dallas native.

"On
behalf of the woman and men of Carrier Strike Group Eleven, please
accept my sincerest thanks for your effort as part of the Steak Team
Mission! The crew is extremely grateful for the superb meal you
provided. The most common comment heard from our Sailors was,
"that was the best meal I have ever eaten at sea." The
generosity you displayed by bringing out food supplies, and teammates
to serve our Sailors was truly impressive.
It
means more than you know to our Sailors to have the support of our
great country and the people they proudly serve. Thank you again
for your generous participation in a terrific program!
Sincerely,
J.W. Miller
Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy
"It's
a wonderful feeling to know that civilians
could risk their lives to bring a ray of
happiness to the soldiers of K-2.
